Using SSH from a Windows computer

Remote Login, or SSHing, is a way to connect to a CS department computer from anywhere, like your dorm. You can log in so that there is no difference between being physically in the Sunlab and using your own computer. You can set up your computer so that the display will be identical to a Sunlab computer. In order to do anything that requires graphics at all (including xterm), you'll need to use X Server software, such as Exceed (available from Brown). You can access the file system, so that the same programs are available and you can turn in your programs using the cs015_handin scripts. Remote login is slower than working in the CS lab, especially when dealing with heavy graphics.

To set up SSH for remote login:
  1. Download Exceed from here. (It requires that KeyAccess be installed and running.)
  2. Follow the instructions at: http://www.cs.brown.edu/ugrad/tech/slides/ssh.pdf

You should now be logged into a CS machine with a basic text terminal. To start FVWM (your desktop), start Exceed and type .xsession in your Putty shell.

There is general remote access information available from the CS department here.
