Below you will find a variety of projects developed for the Educational Software Seminar from 1992-1997. Each program was developed in concert with a specific teacher and with a specific classroom in mind, and all were created using Apple's Hypercard. The most recent software projects, created with a variety of languages and tools for various platforms, are listed on the CS92 Software Page. You are free to download any of the programs; however, commercial redistribution is prohibited as is charging a fee for their use under any circumstances.


English and Language Arts

Adventures of the Intergalactic Space Cadets

An entertaining space adventure for 9th graders. Teaches and tests a variety of language skills, including word roots, synonyms, antonyms, analogies, and elimination.

Back to Canterbury

A game for 8th graders. Students explore Chaucer's Canterbury Tales by assuming the roles of certain characters.

Dekodihpukan

A game for kindergarteners learning to read. Based on the Dekodiphukan phonetics system.

The Adventures of SuperWriter!

A tutorial and game teaching essay-writing skills. Covers the elements and methods of a 5-paragraph essay. Originally designed for hearing-impaired students.


Social Studies and History

Master Mayans

A program developed for 6th grade students. Allows students to practice manipulating Mayan glyphs. Also tests students' knowledge of Mayan culture.

Whaling

An adventure program designed for middle school students. Covers the history, economics and geography of the New England whaling industry.


Science

Energy Crisis Advisor

A goal-based scenario designed for 12th grade chemistry students. Teaches how batteries work, from the electrochemistry of the voltaic cell to the direction of current research.

Enviro P.I.

A game designed for a 9th grade Environmental Science course. It simulates the aftereffects of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill and asks students to develop appropriate response measures.

Team Einstein

An interactive demonstration of physics equations, designed for 11th and 12th grade students. Covers equations for projectile motion, rotational motion, and angular momentum.

Water

An interactive game designed for 6th grade students. Teaches the concepts of mass, force and bouyancy as well as the associated formulas.

Wetlands

A decision-making game designed for 6th grade students. Offers scenarios for both freshwater and saltwater wetlands. Students must solve problems while protecting the environment.


Mathematics

Citybuilder

A game designed for 8th grade math students. Teaches surface area, perimeter, circumference and volume, using the visual metaphor of architecture.

Adventures of the Intergalactic Space Cadets

An entertaining space adventure for 9th graders. Teaches and tests a variety of problem-solving skills, including estimation, unit conversion and comparisons, functions, diagrams, and logic problems.


Other Topics

Breaking the Chain

A program designed for a 9th grade health education class. Teaches the concept of the chain of communicable disease transmission, and uses it to model the AIDS epidemic.

Search Wizard

A game designed for high school students. Teaches and allows students to practice CD ROM search techniques.

Stress

A tutorial and practice program designed for hearing-impaired students. Illustrates proper verbal stress points, and allows students to practice reading aloud.
