Safety from SQL Injection!
10.16.2008 - After you ducklings have taken flight from CS127 and write queries for real world applications, SQL Injection is something you'll eventually have to worry about. Over at Oracle, an interesting paper was just published on making your database injection-proof. From the abstract:Googling for "SQL injection" gets about 4 million hits. The topic excites interest and superstitious fear. This whitepaper dymystifies the topic and explains a straightforward approach to writing database PL/SQL programs that provably guarantees their immunity to SQL injection.
Pretty interesting stuff, take a look if you're interested! -TA's
Only when a PL/SQL subprogram executes SQL that it creates at run time is there a risk of SQL injection; and you'll see that it's easier than you might think to freeze the SQL at PL/SQL compile time. Then you'll understand that you need the rules which prevent the risk only for the rare scenarios that do require run-time-created SQL. It turns out that these rules are simple to state and easy to follow. -
Graduate Credit and SQL
10.07.2008 - Two things: any students interested in Graduate Credit should contact Stan ASAP if you haven't spoken to him about it already. Second: SQL is due tomorrow (Wednesday) at 11:59pm. Thanks! -

Handin Script fix!
10.03.2008 - Hey everyone, handin scripts have been fixed. Thanks for your patience! -TA's -
Bourgeois influences on handin scripts!
10.02.2008 - Just a note: handin scripts currently aren't working due to a minor problem involving Unix permissions and what 'groups' all your student accounts are registered with. Note that this does NOT interfere with your ability to work on the project, just whether or not you can hand it in for the time being. The appropriate authorities have been contacted and the issue will be resolved as soon as possible, and we'll send an e-mail to the mailing list as soon as its been cleared. We're sorry for the hiccup and thanks for your patience -TA's -
Homework 4 OUT!
09.29.2008 - Homework 4 is out! Also, SQL! On the Assignments page, there is a supplement to the SQL handout taken from another class, CS032. You are not expected to implement this. This supplement is merely to assist and demonstrate how to connect to the database using the Java interface. -
