Privacy

Because student accounts were created for course work, it is ensured that TAs may freely access student files. Although this prevents students from securing personal files, we feel that given the nature of these accounts, this loss of security is acceptable. TAs must realize, however, that the ability to read a file does not give one the right to violate another's privacy. Trust is an important part of the relationship between students and TAs, and flagrant disregard of others' personal information can destroy an already tenuous bond.

When accounts are issued, the head TAs should explain the issues of privacy and warn students that TAs could potentially read any files they create. At the same time, the head TAs might wish to review the Using Computing Resources at Brown University especially with regard to the sections on computer security.
