Course Directory and Student Account Protections
It is the responsibility of the course staff to understand the ramifications of course protections . Only people who belong to the "admin" mail group should change protections. Thus, any changes in the course protections must be requested by mailing "admin." The protections will allow users with the group id of "csxxxta" to have read, write, and execute privileges and all others to have read and execute rights. The exceptions are the admin, src, and tabin directories which do not allow access to anyone outside of group csxxxta. The only instance in which rights may be modified is if a script must be made executable. This is accomplished through the chmod command. Execute a man chmod to see the manual page that explains how to use this command. If any other changes are planned, please see us first. It is possible that students may accidentally or intentionally alter their file permissions and prevent the TAs from accessing their files. To reduce the likelihood of this happening, the members of the "admin" group will periodically scan course accounts for files with incorrect permissions and fix them. Doing this raises certain issues of privacy, however. TAs should avoid reading files which do not directly pertain to the course material (see section 7 for a more detailed discussion of course accounts and privacy).
