Space Monitoring
To prevent students from unnecessarily using large amounts of disk space, all course accounts will be set up with a special login shell which will check the amount of disk space being used by the student. This check will be performed each time a login shell is invoked. The shell will compare the space actually used by the student to the fixed limit for the course. The student will then be shown the amount of space being used. If the amount of space in use is greater than 80% of the limit, a warning will be issued. If the amount of storage in use is greater than the limit, the student will not be allowed to log in. In order to get back into the account, the student will have to request help from the consultant on duty.If there is a need for a course's space limit to be increased, the Headta should mail admin requesting an increase and stating the amount of space needed.
To cut down on space consumption, students should be urged to delete core files and compress old copies of programs. They should also remove unneeded executables. The consultants will assist anyone who is unfamiliar with the use of the compress and uncompress commands.
