Startup Files
As with most things in this department, the course accounts are in
a transition period. Sometime next year we will give students named
accounts rather than course accounts. When students add a course,
they will add a course specific module to their named accounts. This
module will alter the students' dot files; making the necessary
changes so that the students will be able to complete their course
work.
Stencil Accounts
Student accounts are created from a stencil account, csxxx000 or
csxxx001. Each course will need to create a stencil account. This
semester, all stencil accounts will be based on the default course
account, cs000000. Each course will need to make a few changes to
accommodate course specific needs. However, these changes should be
few, small, and justifiable. For example, cs16 will likely need to
change the path, and add support for Wave.
Supported Software and Environment Variables
Stencil accounts should only use supported software. Software is
supported if it is located in the /usr/ or /opt/. Exceptions to this
rule will be made if you can justify them to the meta-ta.
When possible, environment variables should be wrapped up with the
executables that use them. For example, if
What To Do
- Get the password for csxxx000 from the meta-ta.
- Determine what course specific changes must be made.
- Mail your list of changes to the meta-ta.
Stencil Account Approval
Before student accounts can be created, the stencil
account must be approved by the meta-ta. Approval will likely
take 3 days (sometimes longer), so be sure to plan ahead.
Use your TA accounts to determine what changes are
nessecary to the default account to enable students to
complete there class work. E-mail requested changes to the
meta-ta. Student accounts will be created within three days
after your request.
When requesting changes to your student accounts, keep in
mind that courses accounts should only use supported software.
(Exceptions will be made if you can provide solid
justification.) Also keep in mind that our goals are complete
functionality, and simplicity.
