The project code-named Awarenex is a research prototype designed to help members of distributed work groups keep in close contact with one another. Short for "awareness nexus," Awarenex provides a combination of awareness and communication features to users on desktop computers, mobile PDAs, and telephones. Awareness is maintained by visual indicators, activity icons, and sounds. Communication resources include instant messaging, phone, e-mail, on-line calendar, and simple data sharing. By bridging across desktops, mobile devices, and telephony, Awarenex allows office-based users to communicate more effectively with colleagues on the road, and enhances mobile users' abilities to select the best way to contact other mobile and office-based colleagues.
