Applying to the Master's (ScM) Program
Thank you for your interest in our master's program. If you haven't already, we suggest you first acquaint yourself with our master's program to determine that it's appropriate for your needs.
Please read our FAQ. It answers many of the questions you probably have.
Application Requirements
We expect strong results from our applicants in the following:
Again, we urge you to read our FAQ.
- GRE General Exam (recommended but not required)
- GRE Subject (Computer Science) Exam (recommended but not required)
- Record of grades or other academic performance
- Letters of reference (NOTE: you might suggest to your letter writers that they look at http://www.cs.brown.edu/~sk/Memos/Grad-School-Recos/.)
- TOEFL or IELTS (for applicants whose native language is not English)
Applying
To maximize flexibility, we have a rolling deadline. This means we accept students until we have filled the available slots. For the fall semester, we will begin reviewing applications in the middle of January and stop on July 15. For the spring semester, the application deadline is December 11. Because the number of spaces is small (to preserve the high quality of education) and admission is competitive, you would be best off applying as early as possible.
You can complete the entire application on-line and we prefer you use this medium. If, however, you cannot apply on-line, you can request a paper application form.
You can get additional information from our FAQ and from the Graduate School's Web site.
Graduate applications to Brown are handled by a combination of the department and the Graduate School. Your application is formally processed by the Graduate School. Its content is then read by members of the department, who then forward their recommendations to the Graduate School. The Graduate School formally admits you to the program. Therefore, you may receive correspondence from either of these entities. We regret to say that the Brown Computer Science Department does not provide financial aid to master's students.
