Industrial Partners Program: Membership Information

The primary goals of the Industrial Partners Program (IPP) are to exceed the expectations of our partner companies in terms of recruiting and outreach; to allow our faculty to engage in challenging and meaningful research collaborations; and to provide resources, funding and employment to our students.

Membership in IPP can begin at any time during the calendar year and the membership level can vary throughout the year based on your company's needs (e.g., it is possible to have an Affiliate-level membership for the fall, but increase to a Premier Partner-level membership for the spring and summer). Membership level is determined by a company's total contribution to the Department. There are many ways to achieve a particular membership level; we encourage you to contact us to discuss your particular situation.

IPP membership funds are used to finance department-based computer science initiatives. Organizations such as WiCS, an undergraduate/graduate program for Women in Computer Science; The Artemis Project, which provides educational outreach to high-school age minority women interested in computer science and engineering; and all of our other computer science undergraduate and graduate organizations rely on IPP funding to attend conferences and academic events, to invite guest speakers from industry and to host employment networking events.

Membership Levels

The Industrial Partners Program offers five flexible levels of membership to accommodate the different needs of our partners. At every level, companies enjoy preferential access to one of the top-ranked Computer Science departments in the country.

Individuals

Memberships are available to individuals wanting exposure to a wide range of computer science research. Whether for continuing education or personal enrichment, individual memberships are an excellent opportunity to build and maintain contacts while participating in the rich intellectual life of the Department. Membership benefits include a subscription to Conduit, an invitation to all IPP sponsored events and distribution of employment information.

Yearly contribution: $500

Small Business Supporters

Membership at the Small Business Supporters level is designed for Southeastern New England based small companies and Brown alumni-driven start-ups that would like exposure to our research, faculty, and students. Our goal is to help our Small Business Supporters develop their businesses and increase their ties with the Department over time. Membership benefits include:

  • Two invitations to the fall and spring IPP Symposia on topics of interest to IPP members. These symposia feature talks and panel discussions from leaders in computer science. Symposia also offer rare opportunities for pre-competitive cooperation at Brown with other IPP members.
  • Invitations to Computer Science seminars and colloquia. Members are included on the mailing list for the wide-ranging talks and seminars held every week in the department.
  • Distribution of employment notices.
  • Subscription to and acknowledgment in Conduit. With a circulation of 3,500, this biannual research publication reaches all Brown Computer Science and Computer Engineering alumni, all chairs of CS and CE departments in North America, and many others.

Yearly contribution: $2,000

Affiliates

The Affiliates level increases exposure to our faculty and students. Affiliates receive:

  • Four invitations to the fall and spring IPP Symposia on topics of interest to IPP members. These symposia feature talks and panel discussions from leaders in computer science. Symposia also offer rare opportunities for pre-competitive cooperation at Brown with other IPP members.
  • A guaranteed place at Brown's spring and fall Career Fairs; fees are waived for the spring event.
  • Specialized job announcements via targeted email, campus mail, and posters. Affiliates are strongly encouraged to present employment and internship information sessions and technical talks within the department on a regular basis.
  • Employment and internship opportunities are also coordinated with Brown's Career Development Center. The Department works closely with Affiliates to identify highly talented and motivated students for internships and full-time employment.
  • Access to our alumni base. Partner companies are encouraged to submit mid-level and/or senior-level openings to our internally controlled CS alumni network group.

Yearly contribution: $10,000

Premier Partners

The Premier Partner level brings privileged access to our faculty and students. In addition to the benefits afforded all previous levels, Premier Partners also can expect:

  • Unlimited number of attendees at IPP symposia.
  • Opportunities to present current research, issues or trends at the IPP Symposia.
  • Match-making between Partners and research projects, faculty, and students.
  • Invitations to present specialized technical talks, providing Partners occasions to showcase their research or development projects. Undergraduate students, graduate students and faculty are invited to these seminars.
  • Specialized recruiting and information events in the Department. The Department works with companies to reach their desired target audience as effectively as possible, often in cooperation with Brown's Career Development Center and other academic departments.
  • Availability of faculty to give talks on their research interests at Partner sites.

Yearly contribution: $25,000

Collaborators

This brand new multi-disciplinary program allows members to utilize the resources of other academic departments in addition to those of Computer Science. This is ideal for companies who are looking to establish research ties and hire students with backgrounds in Computer Science as well as a variety of engineering, scientific or artistic disciplines. The pricing for this highly individualized membership depends on a company's specific research and recruiting needs. Collaborators become a vital part of the life of the department and the University. Their contributions are manifold and our interactions with them are custom-tailored to their changing business and research needs. In addition to the benefits of our Premier Partners, our Collaborators receive:

  • Unparalleled access to students and faculty. The special relationship created with Collaborators imparts a deep understanding of their needs and the Department continuously looks for new ways to enhance the relationship between the Collaborator, the Computer Science Department and the rest of the university.
  • Extensive opportunities for collaboration with faculty and students on research projects.
  • Opportunities to arrange an IPP Symposium in conjunction with a faculty member.
  • Invitations for researchers to lecture in classes (by special arrangement).
  • Specialized classes offered at the Partner's site (by special arrangement).
