Biography

Usas came to Brown in the summer of 2003 as its first Executive Director of Academic and Network Systems and Services in Computing and Information Services (CIS). His responsibilities include the campus data network, infrastructure systems (email, web servers, directories, etc.), and academic technology. He oversees the Scholarly Technology and Instructional Technology groups.

A seventeen-year veteran of high-technology industry, Usas has held senior technical and executive engineering positions at several companies. Until 2003, he was vice president of engineering at OneSecure, a manufacturer of network intrusion prevention appliances. In earlier roles he lead product engineering at Avistar Communications, a manufacturer of videoconferencing and collaborative systems, NaviLinks, a seed-funded web data mining startup, and SecureSoft, a venture-funded enterprise application security pioneer. Usas had responsibility for operating system development and security products at Tandem Computers, a manufacturer of commercial fault-tolerant computers.

Earlier in his career Usas worked in the administration of Princeton University and taught computer science. He did research on distributed systems design at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey following graduate school.

He has a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from Princeton University and Masters and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University, all in electrical engineering.
