What is Artemis?
The Artemis Project is a five-week summer program for girls entering 9th grade who are interested in science and technology. The program is free; transportation is provided for all students through RIPTA bus passes and lunch is provided.
When/where does Artemis take place?
The program is held on the Brown University campus from June 23 - July 25. The hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 am - 3:30 pm.
What will I learn?
We begin by introducing the computer and its basic functions. You will gain an understanding of Windows, Mac, and UNIX operating systems and the fundamental workings of a computer.
We will focus on the use of logic and deductive reasoning to explore topics in computer science including object-oriented programming and artificial intelligence (robots). You will be introduced to some of the most cutting-edge discoveries in computer science.
You will also learn the practical skills needed for using Microsoft Office, editing images with Photoshop, and making web pages with HTML and CSS.
By the end of the program, you will have the practical skills and conceptual background to allow you to follow your interests in whatever direction they may lead you.
Who can apply?
Creative and motivated girls who are curious about math, science, or computers and are entering 9th grade in fall 2008 are qualified to apply for Artemis. No prior computer experience is necessary.
How do I apply?
