Pascal Van Hentenryck is a professor of computer science at Brown University and director of the optimization laboratory. Before coming to Brown in 1990, he spent four years at the European Computer-Industry Research Center (ECRC). He has also been a professor at the university of Louvain (Belgium) and a visiting professor at MIT and the university of Marseilles. He holds a PhD from the Universityof Namur (Belgium) for his work on the constraint programming language CHIP at ECRC.

His main research interests are in combinatorial optimization, decision making under uncertainty, and programming languages. Other areas of interest include algorithm design, static analysis of programs, global optimization, numerical analysis, and software engineering. Pascal spends most of his research time building innovative software systems.

His current projects include the Comet system, large-scale optimization, online stochastic combinatorial optimization, tertiary structure prediction, and hardware and software verification.
