Research Project:

Diagrammer

Diagram drawing is a generic cross-disciplinary task that is particularly well-suited for pen-based interaction. However, diagramming tools are popularly designed to capitalize on the properties of mouse input devices, typically resulting in clunky pen-based interactions -- consider for instance double-clicking, or grabbing a thin window border. At the same time, conventional diagram tools avoid the gestural activities, such as recognizing primitives in drawings, that would make pen-based interaction compelling. The Diagrammer project will explore pen-sensitive ways to blend gestural interaction, drawing recognition, and widget interactions that collectively will provide an intuitive user interface continuum from informal sketching to refined illustration.
