Overlay Networks
Overlay Networks are virtual networks built on top of an existing network, usually the Internet. Overlay networks provide enhanced functionality without requiring changes in the underlying network. For example overlay networks have been used to provide application-level multicast when IP Multicast is unavailable, to route around Internet failures, to enable IPv6 without gloabl participation, and so on.
