The Greenhouse is a project of the National Science Foundation's Graphics and Visualization Center. It is a resource for teachers in any discipline who wish to use 3D computer graphics in their courses. These resources were created by teachers from a range of disciplines including computer science, math, biology, physics, industrial technology, and art and design. The resources available include lesson plans, exercises/activities, and interactive software.

Resources

These Curricular Resources--Concept Illustrations, Lesson Plans, and Descriptions of Class Exercises--were conceived and begun during a three-week workshop for High School Teachers at National Science Foundation's Graphics and Visualization Center. The Workshop, held at the Center's Brown University site gave the teachers the time, facilities, and technical support necessary to plan and begin to execute their own projects. We sincerely hope that you find these various resources valuable.

Projects

• Physics
  • Physics Illustrations by Robert Rainwater
    This set of three dimensional illustrations are designed to assist High School physics students to visualize magnetic and electrical field mechanics.
• Computer Science
  • Teaching Computer Science by Linda di Vittorio
    This course unit includes a set of lessons and assignments for teaching Computer Science with a Computer Graphics emphasis.
  • The Classical High School Multimedia lab by Bonnie Beckham
    The Multimedia Lab at Classical High School in Providence, Rhode Island is an example of one way computer technology can be implemented to augment the teaching of humanities in high-school classes. Teachers and students use the lab to create dynamic presentations in all academic disciplines.
• Art
  • Optical Illusions by Lucille Mota-Costa
    This is a complete course unit for High School Art Students. It includes discriptions of various kinds of optical illusions as well as exercises useful in helping students to understand the concept.
• Math
  • Linear Interpolation by Jim Hall and Dick Lacivita
    This interdisciplinary unit blends Math and Art concepts to teach linear interpolation. Students create their own teaching segments which become the underpinnings of the course in future semesters.
• Industrial Design
  • 2D to 3D: The Design Process by Ron Berube
    Teaching the design process is especially challenging, but the computer makes the transition from plan to finished project easier for some students. One possible course through this field is described in this unit.
  • Solar Car: the design process by Michael Rinaldi
    The Solar Car Project allows for teaching on every aspect of the design process "from art to part." Students participate in research, planning, design and execution of a full-scale solar powered electric car.
• Biology
  • Exploring a 3-D Cell by Jim Rusconi
    With the advantages afforded by three dimensional modeling, the cell and its organelles become real in a new way to beginning biologists.
