The Solar Car: Teaching the Design Process in High School

Goals

The Solar Car Project allows for teaching on every aspect of the design process "from art to part." Students participate in research, planning, design and execution of a full-scale solar powered electric car. Modeling in space isn't only for gaming. Serious 3D graphic applications can be found in academic, medical, pharmaceutical, and industrial fields just to name a few.

Hands-on computer graphics activities will be used for prototype design and modeling and to teach mathematical concepts. The Mathematical principles will be presented in a arcade game like manner. Mathematical concepts such as transformations, geometric constructions, coordinates, ratios, proportions, angle measurements, rotation alignments of axis, and projections in 3 Space will be introduced. A series of walk-through exercises using TrueSpace 3 D software will have students construct solar cars from pre-made solar car parts.
