Sending a "Vacation" Message
If you're not going to be reading and responding to your email, you might want to use the "vacation" program to automatically reply to people who send you mail. To ease the configuration of vacation, use themailconfig(1) script. Once you have done this, users who
e-mail you will receive an auto-reply message of your choosing. There is
a reply interval of one week, which means that if a user sends you three
e-mails in one week, they will receive only one auto-reply.
Note: You must be logged into a linux machine to run mailconfig.
If you usually use a Windows machine, either use cygwin or log into a linux
workstation.
Running mailconfig without any options causes
mailconfig to print its usage.
To turn on a vacation auto-response message, use the command
/local/bin/mailconfig -v on
To turn off a vacation auto-response message, use the command
/local/bin/mailconfig -v off
In order to edit the message which will be sent to users while you are on vacation and you are using linux, use this command:
/local/bin/mailconfig -m
which will open your default editor to edit the message.
If you are using windows edit the .vacation.msg file by doing the following:
click:
Start
My Computer
(Z:)
right click a file named .vacation.msg and then click:
Open With
Microsoft Office Word
Note that you can edit this message regardless of whether auto-reply is actually on.
