Reading Mail
Secure IMAP and SMTP provide an authenticated, encrypted connection for sending and retrieving mail. The mail reader on your remote machine connects to the secure IMAP/SMTP services at Brown CS directly.
Setting up your LDAP password
To use secure IMAP/SMTP, you must first establish an LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) password, which you will use each time you read your email. Do not use your kerberos (login) password.
The instructions to set your LDAP password are here
Configure Your Mail Reader
On your remote machine, you must configure your mail reader to use the CS department's servers to send and retrieve your mail. The exact details vary depending on the mail reader.
Incoming Mail Server
- Set the incoming mail server to imaps.cs.brown.edu.
- Set Secure IMAP. You may have to separately select IMAP and SSL.
Outgoing Mail Server
- Set the outgoing mail server to smtps.cs.brown.edu.
- Set Secure Connection over port 25(TLS only), 465(SSL only) or 587(TLS only).
Unless you have great faith in the security of your remote machine, we do not recommend that you select "remember password".
For instructions on specific clients, check the page at Brown CS Email.
