Setting up the DNS search path on Windows XP

The following is a guide to setting up the DNS service on Windows XP to automatically search for hosts in the domain *.cs.brown.edu. For example, instead of having to type web-int.cs.brown.edu, you will be able to simply type web-int.

  1. Right click on My Network Places and select Properties. Depending on the version of Windows that you are running, My Network Places will be either on the desktop or in the Start menu.
  2. Right click on the network adapter you use to connect to the department and select Properties. If you are connecting through the VPN, select properties for the VPN connection.
  3. Select the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) entry and select Properties.
  4. Click the Advanced button.
  5. Click the DNS tab.
  6. Select the Append these DNS suffixes (in order) radio button and then add cs.brown.edu.
