VPN Setup for Windows XP(Also Works with Vista)
The following is a step-by-step guide to connecting to the department VPN using Windows XP.
- In a shell on a departmental linux machine, run pptp-passwd. At the "YP Password:" prompt, enter the password you use to log in locally to a departmental linux machine. At the "New Password" prompt, enter the password you want to use to connect to the VPN. We recommend that this password be distinct from other passwords you might use on the CS system or elsewhere. Remember this password.
- Download and install browncsvpn.exe. It will install silently.
- In the start menu, click on Control Panel
- Click on Network Connections
- To start the vpn connection, double-click the Brown CS VPN icon.
- If you'd like a shortcut icon on your desktop for this connection, right-click the Brown CS VPN icon and click Create Shortcut
- After double-clicking, you will see the following window. Ignore the Logon domain Type your normal CS login and your PPTP password (set in the first step). Oftentimes it will take two or three attempts before the connection works correctly.
- If you receive an error which states that you must provide a phone number or select a local connection, then click Properties and select I am already connected to the Internet.
- You are now connected through the VPN. The VPN is encrypted and it is safe to send passwords, etc. To disconnect, right-click on the icon in the bottom right of your screen that flashes when there is network traffic, and choose Disconnect.
