Support of Remote Computing

(Faculty Only)

Enacted by FACIL September 7, 2002

1. A home desktop, laptop, and all necessary communication hardware will be provided to each faculty member and fully funded by the Department.
2. Desktop models will be the same hardware as distributed within the department.
3. Laptops will be limited to a single model. This model will be selected by the faculty every 6 months or two models every year. The chosen model will be purchased, vetted by the staff, and found to be suitable for both Linux and Windows. Sufficient numbers of that laptop will be acquired, at that one time, to satisfy all faculty needs. The model purchased for the staff will become a staff testbed and laptop loaner.
4. Operating systems on these computers will be limited to Linux, Windows or a dual-booted version of the two.
5. Upgrade/replacement funding will be made available every two years. Faculty wishing a more frequent cycle must provide their own financing.
6. Each model will include the software packages agreed to by FACIL to ensure functionality, uniformity and supportability.
7. Laptops and desktops will be regularly returned to the Department, at an agreed on interval, for maintenance and upgrading.
8. Faculty members may have superuser privileges on their systems.
9. The staff will develop a mechanism, approved by FACIL, for accessing the department remotely as well as accessing email. Each faculty member will adopt these methods or must be willing to support themselves.
10. Users are expected to routinely back up these systems using staff approved hardware and techniques. System recovery, in case of disaster, will be to rebuild the system to its original state and apply the file recovery available through the recommended backup technique. Beyond those efforts the faculty member is solely responsible.
11. This set of equipment and applications will comprise the complete extent of staff responsibility in support of remote computing. Until the policy is appropriately amended, no other devices or applications will be supported.
