Bruce Linux Release

Bruce

The Summer, 2006 release is from Debian "Etch." Bruce was frozen on Monday, June 5th, 2006.

The last freeze was codenamed "Squirt" and was frozen on Friday, August 5th, 2005. It was the Debian "Sarge" release, with some minor, frozen modifications.

The exact number of packages installed on our desktop machines varies over time, but at the time of this upgrade Squirt had 1958 and Bruce had 2159. 275 packages were removed (though some were replaced by new packages with different names) and 476 new packages were added, for a net increase of 201 packages.

The tstaff has compiled a complete inventory of the 2220 packages added, removed or upgraded in the transition from Squirt to Bruce:

Squirt to Bruce Upgrade Highlights

Here are some of the more notable changes that accompany this upgrade:
abiword
Abiword moves from 2.2.7 to 2.4.4, the most recent stable release. Visit http://www.abisource.com/ for more information.
bash
Bash gets a major upgrade from 2.05 to 3.1 (see the announcement);
cairo
The cairo 2D graphics library is new with this upgrade.
firefox
The firefox web browser was 1.0.4, is now 1.5.0 (see the 1.5 announcement).
g++
The gnu compiler suite has several versions installed at once, but the one you get by default changes with this upgrade from 3.3.5 to 4.0.3. Watch out C++ developers - 4.1 is coming - test your code before it becomes the default! (4.1 is more strict).
galeon
The galeon web browser see's a major revision, from 1.3.20 to 2.0.1.
gnome
The entire Gnome desktop bumps up from 2.8.0 to 2.12.0 (see the release notes).
gnumeric
The gnumeric spreadsheet moves from 1.4.3 to 1.6.3 (see the announcement).
kde
The KDE desktop moves up a minor rev: 3.3.2 to 3.5.2 (see the announcement).
koffice
The KDE office suite gets a minor rev, too, from 1.3.5 to 1.4.2 (see the announcement). Look for 1.5 in the fall.
openoffice
OpenOffice bumps from 1.1.3 to 2.0.1, a big release. (see the release notes).
qt 4
Qt 4.1.2 is now installed.
thunderbird
Mozilla's mail reader moves from 1.0.4 to 1.5.0 (see the release notes).
valgrind
The valgrind debugging and profiling tools see a major upgrade, from 2.4.0 to 3.1.1. (see the release notes).
xmh
The xmh mail reader is gone with this upgrade. Use exmh.

Kernel Upgrade

All 2.6.10 kernels will be upgraded to 2.6.15.
