Supported Operating Systems
Tstaff supports workstations running Linux and Windows XP. Questions or problems regarding supported OSs should be sent to "problem@cs.brown.edu".
Linux
The distribution of Linux that is supported on CS workstations is Debian.
The current version of Debian running on our systems is a local snapshot chosen to balance between stability and newness. This local "release" is frozen three times a year: at the start of each semester and at the start of the Summer.
Windows XP
The version of Windows that is supported on CS workstations is Windows XP.
Currently, Windows XP is at Service Pack 2
VMWare: Windows from Linux
Linux users can run Windows in a VMWare virtual machine.
Other OS's
All other operating systems are not supported. (In the words of former SPOC Dan Price, "Stunningly unsupported"). Unsupported operating systems include, but are not limited to: Windows 3.51, Windows 95, Windows 98, MacOS, BeOS, Plan 9, VMS, OS/360, Hurd, OS/2, TOPS-20, Multics, *BSD, CP/M, Tenex, Minix, DOS, Chorus, Amoeba, RSX-11M+, Ultrix, HP-UX, OSF/1, Brazil
