Server Software
Much of the software that provides system-wide services operates in relative obscurity behind the scenes, usually on a server machine locked away in a machine room. For the record, this page describes that software.
Database
- The departmentally supported database server runs postgresql v. 7.4.
Virtual Private Network
- Department VPN servers run Point to Point Tunneling Server (pptpd) to provide secure connections and tunneling support to (predominantly) Windows users in the outside world.
FTP
- The server machine aliased "ftp" runs wu-ftpd, a powerful, flexible and secure open-source ftp server software originally developed at Washington University. Wu-ftpd is the most popular ftp daemon on the Internet.
Mailing Lists
-
The server machine aliased "list" runs Mailman, the GNU Mailing List Manager. Mailman manages email discussion lists and features an integrated web interface.
Web
- See the web software page.
