Squirt Linux Release

Squirt

The Semester I, 2005 release is the stable, released version of Debian "Sarge" with some minor, frozen modifications. Squirt was frozen on Friday, August 5th, 2005.

The last freeze was codenamed "Crush" and was frozen on Monday, May 16th, 2005. It was a snapshot of "Sarge" prior to its release.

The exact number of packages installed on our desktop machines varies over time, but at the time of this upgrade Crush had 1833 and Squirt had 1791. 44 packages were removed (though some were replaced by new packages with different names) and 2 new packages were added, for a net decrease of 42 packages.

The tstaff has compiled a complete inventory of the 326 packages added, removed or upgraded in the transition from Crush to Squirt:

Crush to Squirt Upgrade Highlights

Here are some of the more notable changes that accompany this upgrade:
Java
With this release, the installed version of java moves from the Blackdown 1.4 port to Sun's 1.5.
libqt2
This older version of the QT library is finally gone.
Perl 5.005
This old version of perl is gone, too.

Kernel Upgrade

All 2.4 kernels will be upgraded to 2.6.10. We are hopeful that our problems with 2.6 are solved, but only time will tell. If not, we will fall back to 2.4.27.
