Biography

I joined the neural interface research team in 2005 when I started postdoctoral training with Drs. Michael Black and John Donoghue in Computer Science at Brown University. I have been working for the BrainGateTM clinical pilot trial where several participants with tegraplegia have volunteered in the study of the feasibility of intracortical brain-machine interfaces in humans with paralysis. I have developed decoding algorithms to decipher computer cursor movement signals from human motor cortical neurons. Currently, I am jointly appointed as a postdoctoral research associate in Computer Science and Neuroscience at Brown University.

Before coming to Brown University, I received Ph.D and M.S. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Florida. I was working in the

Computational NeuroEngineering Laboratory, supervised by Dr. Jose C. Principe. I was working in a joint brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) project with

Duke University, SUNY and MIT, which was sponsored by DARPA. In this project, I have developed a number of signal processing algorithmic tools

for decoding kinematic variables from an array of hundreds of neuronal firing rates collected from motor cortical areas of a monkey, and for analyzing the motor-related neural systems based on BMIs experimental setups.

I received my B.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering at Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea Rep. in 1994.

I live with my wonderful wife, Mikyung, and two lovely daughters, Ejew and Ewon.
