Disk Space
Space usage for the Computer Science system is divided into five catagories: home, projects, web, temporary, and semi-static.
Home
Undergraduate
Undergraduate accounts login using the fsh shell, which checks the amount of space being used against the amount of space allocated.
Masters, PhD, Faculty, Staff and Guest:
There are no set space usage limits for these accounts, but we do ask users to use the amount of space needed for their work and to be responsible by keeping their account clean.
Projects
contrib and research
Space used in /contrib and /research is not limited, but we do expect project owners to be conscientious and use this area only for the project it was created for. It should be kept as clean as possible.Web
As with /contrib and /research, the amount of space used is not limited, but we do ask that only files that are going to be available on the web be kept there.
Temporary
/tmp
There is a small amount of space available in /tmp on all machines. This space is not backed up and its files are removed by the system if the machine crashes or is rebooted. This space is available to all users.
/ltmp
There is a large amount of space available in each machine's /ltmp. This space is not backed up and the files do not go away when the machine is rebooted. They are removed, however, whenever a machine is reinstalled, but we try to give prior notice so anything in /ltmp can be moved to a safer place. Hard drives do fail; if you want to be especially cautious, it is suggested to not use /ltmp. This space is available to all users.
Semi-Static
/tierfs
The Tiered File System (a.k.a., tierfs) is additional space for users to store their files when they are less worried about the files being backed up. This space is primarily used for large data sets and logging - generally speaking, large data that will not need to be backed up frequently, or not backed up at all. Read more about tierfs.
